Pakistan: Values

The majority of Pakistanis are bound together by common values and a common religion. Below are some common beliefs that many Pakistanis hold true:

  • Importance of family
  • Respect for tradition
  • Respect for authority
  • Respect for elders
  • Patriarchy
  • Faith in Islam

Q: What do you think patriarchy means?

A: Patriarchy is a social system in which the father or eldest male is head of the household—having authority over women and children. Patriarchy also refers to the dominance of men in social and cultural systems. In exchange for loyalty and honor, men care for their families by providing food, clothing and protection. It is important to note that not all patriarchies stay that way over time. Some families may shift away from patriarchic practices—especially in large cities.

  • The family is the center of the social structure and includes aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins and honorary relations such as close family friends.

  • People get strength and stability from their family. They also look out for each other.
