Camel Jumping

Jumping over camels is a popular traditional sport in Yemen.

South Yemen made its debut at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988. Sending only eight athletes, the country won no medals. This was the only time the country went to the Olympics until unification in 1990.

Soccer (or football) is the most popular “modern day” sport in Yemen. In 2010, Yemen hosted the Gulf Cup of Nations in Aden. Ali Al Nono was named to be the best Yemeni footballer for his exceptional skills and plays as a striker for Al-Ahli San’a.

In 2015, the Yemen soccer team endured a 13-hour boat trip to Djibouti to flee from their war-torn country to make it to the qualifying match for the World Cup.
