Colombia: Food

  • Colombian food is characterized by a blend of European cuisine and indigenous Colombian cuisine.

  • Well known Colombian dishes include arepa Sonoco, bandeja paisa, ajiaco, lechona Tolimense, mote de queso and cuchuco.

  • Fritanga is enjoyed throughout the country and usually includes grilled beef, chicken, ribs and sausage accompanied by mini potatoes and arepas (photo) made of choclo (sweet corn).

  • Staples of the Colombian diet include potatoes, yuca, beef, chicken, pork and fish. Grains such as corn and rice are widely consumed. Plantains are an important element of the Colombian diet, as are vegetables such as onions, garlic, peppers and tomatos. Legumes such as beans, peas and lentils are eaten very frequently. A myriad of fruit species grow in Colombia and many fruits considered “exotic” outside of Colombia are commonly found in Colombian forests and in the countryside.
