  • Spain hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1982 and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

  • Soccer is the most popular sport in Spain. "Football," as it is called in Spain (and many other countries), is the sport with the most registered players with a total of 874,093 (of which 829,220 are men and 44,873 women). In 2010, a total of 75.9% of Spaniards say they had bought tickets to attend a football match at least once

  • Basketball, rugby, tennis, handball, baseball, biking and golf are also popular sports.

  • Basque pelota is an ancient court sport that involves using a ball and the hand, a racket, a bat or a basket. The roots of the game can be traced to Greece and other ancient cultures. Typically there are two players. Jai Alai is the name given to the sport in the US. It is often played as a gaming sport (for money) in CT, RI, FL and Nevada.

  • Flamenco dancing is a traditional dance that is still enjoyed. Typically a classical guitar accompanies the dancers. The dance style involves clapping, stomping and tapping the feet. They style is dramatic and emotional.
