  • The word Peru derives from a local political leader, Biru, who governed in the 16th century.


  • A large part of the Incan Empire was based in what is now Peru—including the Incan architectural masterpiece Machu Picchu.


  • Machu Picchu means “old mountain” in Quechua and was constructed in 1450 at the height of the Incan Empire.


  • The country’s coat of arms, featured on its flag, includes the image of a cinchona tree which is the source of quinine.


  • Lake Titicaca, which lies on the border of Peru and Bolivia, is the largest lake in South America.


  • Ceviche, fish mixed with pepper, cilantro, onions, and garlic, is a popular dish in Peru.
