Chile: Did you know?

  • Chile is known as the "Switzerland of South America" for its incredible natural beauty.

  • Chile is a  true "melting pot" of ethnicities. A Chilean saying says, "Where else in the world can you find German immigrants who speak Spanish and revere a national hero named O'Higgins?"

  • Two Nobel Prize winners in literature have come from Chile. The first Latin American to win the literature prize was Gabriela Mistral in 1945 for her verse and prose. Pablo Neruda won in 1971 for his poetry. Both express beautifully the dreams and frustrations common to many South Americans.

  • Chile is the sixth largest exporter of wine and the second largest producer of salmon in the world.

  • Wheat, corn, beans, grapes, timber, fish and beef are all common agricultural products.

  • Isla de Pascua (Easter Island) and Isla Sala y Gomez belong to Chile.
