UK: Shopping

  • One of the most famous stores in Britain is called Harrods of London. Started in 1849 as a grocery store, today it is a huge department store that sells luxury items from all over the world.
  • Another department store named Marks & Spencer sells quality items at good prices.
  • In smaller villages or towns, shopping is done on the main street or high street of town. Small shops sell a variety of items. Some towns have markets where carts called barrows are set up with people selling their wares.
  • Most street shops in England open at 9:00 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. Small town and village shops usually close for lunch between 1:00-2:00 p.m. The bigger stores in the main towns and cities stay open all day.  In London, and other big cities, stores stay open later on Thursday evenings. Sunday shopping is now available, as well.
  • The largest shopping center and recreation complex in Europe was opened in 1999 near Dartford in Kent. It is called Bluewater . It was built in a former chalk quarry. It has a park-like setting and includes a large lake.
