Workplace Diversity

The multicultural workplace is an increasingly common phenomenon in a perpetually shrinking world.  Employees from various cultural backgrounds are brought together to share important business functions.  A multicultural workplace can be a very challenging working environment, as cultural differences can complicate how things get done.

One of the biggest assumptions companies make about a multicultural workplace, is that everyone is operating on a common platform.  The multicultural workplace really pushes a company’s leadership to ensure there are a clear set of values and principles informing everyone’s behavior.  Individuals then need to determine how best to work with one another given their varying approaches.

The multicultural workplace is complicated by the fact that much of it is growing virtually.  Employees are expected to work closely with counterparts from other cultures that they may have never met in person.  This is particularly challenging, given that outside of the United States, most of the rest of the world’s cultures are far more relationship oriented when it comes to business.

It is important that multicultural work groups develop a sense of team as well as an awareness of their varying strengths and styles.  Teambuilding becomes strategic within this environment, so that everyone can take advantage of the cultural diversity present in the group to achieve optimal work results.
