How do I choose the best assessment tool for a particular need?

Different assessment tools are appropriate, and most effective, in different situations.  IOR offers assessment tools to measure candidate adaptability and readiness; cultural sensitivity and competence; cultural values and work styles; and multicultural workgroup effectiveness.

Assessment Tools: Adaptability – Self Assessment for Global Endeavors (SAGE)
The SAGE can be used for:
  • Self-assessment of readiness for international assignment or intercultural exposure
  • Assessment of suitability for an international assignment and as a tool for self-selection into, or out of, a candidate pool of employees
It is based on psychological traits considered important for successful adaptation to unfamiliar environments and designed to evaluate suitability and, in some cases, motivation. This type of instrument is not recommended as a decision making tool for Human Resources. It is best used, in confidentiality, by potential candidates for international assignment before an assignment has been proffered.  The SAGE is neither linked to the nature of the assignment nor to the destination. The results should be considered within that larger context.  The SAGE can be used in conjunction with cultural training.

Assessment Tools: Cultural Sensitivity/Competence - Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)
The Intercultural Development Inventory is used:
  • To assist management/HR in career or succession planning - specifically in the selection of employees for international assignments, global team membership, or leadership of multicultural groups
  • As a guide to training design in preparation for such assignments (i.e., to develop intercultural competencies)
It is most useful for evaluating employees in critical positions where successful interaction with others, significantly different from oneself, is crucial. It is a cognitive instrument revealing a candidate’s attitude toward otherness.

Assessment Tools: Cultural Values and Work Styles – Culture in the Workplace (CW) & Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICSI)
The CW and ICSI are quick and convenient on-line instruments best used to prepare individuals for:
  • International assignments
  • Membership in intercultural teams
  • International support functions (especially in conjunction with cultural training)
They are excellent for those who have self-selected into the pool of candidates and have now been offered and have accepted an assignment.   The CW and ICSI are also recommended for team or work group intercultural awareness; to understand the nature of specific cultural challenges. They are designed to identify a user's cultural values and the behaviors associated with those values (as well as, in some cases, personal work style) and to provide a comparison with the values/behaviors of relevant other cultures. The instruments do not evaluate readiness or adaptive skills.  They are best used with a facilitated debrief. They also link well with cultural training but are not a substitute for it.

Assessment Tools: Multicultural Workgroup Effectiveness - Global Team Process Questionnaire (GTPQ)

The GTPQ assesses multicultural team effectiveness in a variety of areas including:
  • Language issues
  • Cultural issues
It is appropriate for existing multicultural groups, whether domestic or international, dispersed or local. The GTPQ is a convenient on-line tool for repeated use thatidentifies developmental needsandtracks progress with metric comparison to similar teams in other regions or sectors. It requires a facilitated debrief. While there are a multitude of instruments that examine team composition and effectiveness, this one examines the influence of multicultural participation, and is thus particularly useful for global teams.
