Leadership Assessment Tools
In today’s environment of increasing global diversity, leadership encounters new challenges. Managing a global workforce requires heightened awareness, additional knowledge, and new skills. There are a number of tools that can help to create the necessary awareness and/or measure the skills required for effective multicultural management. Each is most effective when combined with intercultural coaching.Effective Leadership Assessment Tools include:
- The Intercultural Development Inventory: the IDI is a powerful instrument for measuring intercultural sensitivity and the competence to operate effectively in diverse environments. It is effectively used for selection with regard to sensitive positions, as a coaching tool, and for career planning, as it indicates the most effective intervention for growth at various stages of intercultural development.
- The Global Team Process Questionnaire: the GTPQ is a convenient on-line tool for repeated use that identifies developmental needs and tracks progress with metric comparison to similar teams in other regions or sectors. While there are many instruments that examine team composition and effectiveness, this one examines the influence of multicultural participation, and is thus particularly useful for global teams. Additionally, it provides quarterly progress measurement (wellness checks) as a basis for team leader coaching, indicated interventions, and top management oversight. Finally, the questionnaire is flexible, allowing the addition of optional and custom questions on specific issues.
- Culture in the Workplace: the CWq is an awareness tool based on the research of Geert Hofstede. Using Professor Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, the user compares his or her own cultural preferences with those of selected countries, working with a coach to understand the leadership implications of the differences and to create strategies for effective leadership across selected cultural borders.
- Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ISCI) - illustrates four cultural styles of communication and reveals an individual's personally preferred conflict style. Understanding of these styles enables participants to better prepare for managing sensitive discussions in a multicultural workplace and within multicultural teams.
The combination of a leadership assessment tool with performance-focused coaching is a fast and potent intervention to improve effectiveness in the global workplace.
