Origin and Meaning

Before the 13th century, a Palembang prince was shipwrecked on an island where he thought he saw a lion. Palembang is a city in the south of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The prince named the island "Singa Pura" - "Lion City" or Singapore.

  • The lion, symbolizes courage, strength and excellence. The strength of the lion symbolizes the nation's single-minded resolve to face any challenge and overcome all obstacles.
  • It is solid red against a white background - the colors of the national flag.
  • Its mane is parted in five representing the five ideals: 1. democracy 2. peace 3. progress 4. justice 5. equality.
