Saint Rose (photo), the first saint from the Western Hemisphere to be canonized, is one of the patron saints of Central America and South America. On Saint Rose of Lima Day, a procession takes place in Lima. The statue of Saint Rose is paraded from the shrine where it is usually kept to Lima’s cathedral. Children in the procession dress in white robes and adults dress in purple robes. Saint Rose was born in Lima in 1586.

Battle of Angamos (October 8th)

Miguel María Grau Seminario (1834-1879) was a renowned Peruvian naval officer and hero of the Naval Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) which was a conflict between Chile and the joint forces of Bolivia and Peru. Seminario was known as el Caballero de los Mares (Spanish for "the Knight of the Seas") for his chivalry and is esteemed by both Peruvians and Chileans. Seminario is an iconic figure for the Peruvian Navy. In Peru, the battle is commemorated as a public holiday every October.
