Hong Kong: Geography                                                 

  • Hong Kong means "fragrant harbor" because of the perfumed incense and wood that was once traded there.

 

  • The narrow body of water separating Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula, Victoria Harbor, is one of the deepest natural ports in the world (see below).

 

  • The landscape of Hong Kong can be hilly, mountainous and can have steep slopes. The highest point in the territory is Tai Mo Shan, at a height of 958 meters. Lowlands exist in the northwestern part of the New Territories.

 

  • Hong Kong and its 260 territorial islands and peninsulas are located in the South China Sea, at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta.
