Yemen: Food                                                           

  • In Yemen, many kitchens have a taboon (also called tannur), which is a round clay oven.

 

  • Tomatoes, onions, potatoes, beans and lentils are common vegetables.

 

  • Chicken, goat and lamb are common meats.

 

  • Buttermilk is often consumed daily.

 

  • Lunch is the main meal of the day.

 

  • Meals are eaten while seated on the floor.

 

  • Guests are considered rude if they do not accept what is offered by the host.

 

  • Chili, cumin, coriander seeds and turmeric are common spices.

 

  • Saltah, a meat stew made with tomatoes, garlic and herbs is the national dish.

 

  • Coffee and tea are the most popular beverages and are often mixed with spices (cardamom for coffee, and saffron or mint for tea).
