South Africa: Food                                                           

  • One of the best-known foods is the biltong (image), which is a strip of dried meat that come in various flavors.
  • Potjiekos is a delicious slow-cooked meat and vegetable stew, which is traditionally cooked over an open fire.
  • Mielie Pap, a stiff corn meal mix, is a staple food of the South African diet.
  • Many South Africans love braais (barbeques)!
  • Boerewors is a spicy sausage almost always cooked on the braai.
  • Melktert (milktart) (image) and koeksisters are sweet doughy treats.
  • Why not try skop, which is the head of a cow, sheep or goat? The head is first scrubbed to remove the skin and unwanted parts and then head is boiled and simmered and spiced.
  • Although there are many traditional foods, you will also find Chinese and Indian restaurants, fish and chip shops and many other eateries.
  •  South African wine is probably most well known in the area of the Western Cape.
