Japan: Flag                                                         

  • —  The current Japanese flag was first used February 27, 1870. 

 

  • —  The flag’s name is Hinomaru, the sun-disk flag.

 

  • —  The white background is said to stand for purity and integrity.

 

  • —  The red disk stands for sincerity, brightness and warmth.

 

  • —  The flag symbolizes the Japanese ideal of: Akaki kiyoki tadashiki naoki makoto no kokoro, which means “Bright, pure, just, and gentle of heart.”
