The most popular sport in Costa Rica is soccer (fútbol). During the 2014 World Cup, the Costa Rican team (photo below) advanced to the quarter-finals and became national heroes.

Cost Rica’s Olympic committee was only founded in 1953 even though Costa Rica participated in the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin. Costa Rican athletes have attended every Summer Games since 1956 and have excelled in various sports but most notably in soccer. However, it was swimmer Claudia Poll Ahrens won the country’s first gold medal, in the 200-metre freestyle event at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta.

Other popular sports and leisure activities include: bull fighting, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and fishing.
