Yemen: Did you know?

Did you know that…

…the vast majority of the population is found in the southern Sarawat Mountains, located in the far western region of the country?

…the origin of the word “mocha” is not a type of coffee but a name of a city in Yemen? The city of Mocha (or Mokha) (see map below) has a port on the Red Sea. The small city was a major exporting center for coffee from the 15th to the 18th centuries. Mocha was known for its special high-quality coffee which was harvested from the species of “Arabica” which is a plant native to the Yemen high lands. The beans have a distinct flavor. The taste is described as wild, lively, intense and even a bit gamey. Coffee Arabica is believed to be the first species of coffee to be cultivated in the world! Reference to mocha coffee can even be found on Yemen’s national emblem.
